The Melvins, both native Tar Heels, have called Charlotte "home" for over 20 years, during which they have carefully polished and creatively perfected their reputations as esteemed portrait artists. Working together with inspired harmony and rapport, Ralph and Debbie have intertwined their individual unique talents into a truly remarkable gift for blending Southern charm, penetrating emotion, and elegant craftsmanship into each of their original Masterpieces.

Throughout their careers, Ralph and Debbie have both been highly honored and acclaimed for their skill and artistry, receiving many prestigious prizes and distinguished professional recognition in regional, state and national photographic competitions. And they happily lay claim to the title of most awarded portrait studio in North Carolina during the 1990's: Six Kodak Gallery Awards for Photographic Excellence, two Fuji Masterpiece Awards, The President's Award, the People's Choice Award, 19 First Place Awards and four Best of Show Awards - all in a variety of fields ranging from children to bridal to group photography. In 1997 and 1998, the Professional Photographers of North Carolina named Ralph "Master Photographer of the Year."

The Melvins' photography has been featured in several well-known regional and national magazines, including Elegant Bride, Professional Photographers of America's Storytellers, Rangefinder, and on five covers of Carolina Bride. In 2000, Ralph was chosen as one of eight photographers worldwide to be spotlighted in Fuji's Profiles, with a brief biography and samples of his work. And Ralph and Debbie's prints have been on display at the Kodak Epcot Exhibition and in the General and National Loan Collections of the Professional Photographers of America since 1980.

Dedication to their craft has rewarded both the Melvins with the coveted Master of Photography Degree, making theirs the only studio in the state with two Master Photographers. Both also have earned the Photographic Craftsman Degree, and Debbie recently received her Certification Degree. Ralph has taught at the Winona International School of Photography, and he and Debbie are sought after as both regional and national lecturers to tap their creativity and business expertise. Always in pursuit of their ideals, Ralph and Debbie continue to study with most renowned portrait artists in North America as they strive to create the timeless portraits that have become their hallmark of distinction in the realm of photographic excellence.
